http://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/regulars/if-i-ruled-the-world-marie-louise-coleiro-preca

If I ruled the world: Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca
The President of the Republic of Malta urges more support be given for those in search of a better life

Throughout my life, I have felt human suffering in its diverse forms: a mother holding her terminally-ill child; a father who cannot feed his family; a child who had just witnessed his whole family drown at sea in their quest for a better life; the abduction of girls and boys from their families for sexual exploitation; girls made to suffer the horrific practice of female genital mutilation; children becoming victims of violence and cruelty. The stories go on and on; this is the reality for many people today. And yet, why should it be so? Why are injustices and inequalities still being tolerated, even today?

Poverty brings about much suffering. I am under no illusion that poverty can be readily solved, given the society in which we live, the policies that inform it and the economic interests that drive these policies. However, poverty is not a matter of individual, family or community choice or deficiency, but is rooted in political, social and economic injustices. This is why governments must, and should, all act to address effectively this social threat. The required policies are international, since we are dealing with global phenomena.

Also of particular significance are the biblical numbers of displaced persons fleeing war-torn countries to journey towards mainland Europe, often via my country, Malta. My thoughts are constantly with these people, and especially with the thousands who lose their lives during the course of a difficult journey, one that was meant to give them a dignified and safe life. Our beautiful Mediterranean Sea has become a cemetery for thousands of people in search of a better life for themselves and their families.

This human devastation is further compounded by the fact that those who survive the ordeal are faced with a life of poverty, increased by racist narratives that portray them as a threat to jobs. Many find themselves exploited as a grossly underpaid, and possibly even non-paid, “reserve workforce.” The process of marginalisation breeds further poverty and becomes complete. The only outlet for most migrants seems to be the low paid and insecure informal economy that constitutes an important feature of a number of European countries. We need to shift the discourse, enabling people to understand why migrants leave their country, if we are even to attempt to change the lives of these persecuted people.

The commemorations of a century since the First World War, and 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, should serve as a reminder that there are those who believe that wars and walls are still viable today. Much to my disappointment, bloodshed continues to spill in countries close to home, which I strongly condemn, with conflicts giving rise to the gruesome emergence of extremism resulting in mass atrocities against humanity.

The issues of the long-term unemployed and the “working poor” still exist in Europe. A solution must urgently be sought to this social scourge that is affecting the wellbeing of one in five Europeans, and 1.2bn people globally.

There cannot be any compromise where human life is concerned. We need to keep in mind that violence knows no social class, skin colour, sexuality, age, religion, ability or nationality. Those of us who enjoy freedom should make our voices heard, celebrating our differences. I would like my time as ruler of the world to be remembered for establishing lasting and peaceful dialogue between people of different cultures. This is an ongoing struggle, existing alongside the struggles for democracy, greater social justice and access to better education and health services for all.

Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca is the President of the Republic of Malta

What a national embarrassment!

Maltese politics is just a cynical farce.
No vision whatsoever , dilettantes and opportunists .
Watching them debating makes you vomit.

Their behavior exposes their level of intelligence
comparable to the primitives and savages that they
       let to invade us.

Fools! and charlatans , spending millions on investments
while at the same time allowing Malta to turn into a country
of savages where crime and violence is the order of the day.

Malta is direly in need of true Leaders.
to save us from this nightmarish future that lays ahead.

Maltese politicians have only one thing in their mind.
Get rich as quickly as possible and fuck the rest.
       Traitors .
They have grown  up to be fools , fooled by the Jesus poison.
What they need to do for the sake of the beloved country is to kill themselves.

http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20150414/local/former-prime-minister-calls-for-fair-solution-to-migration.563976

Former Prime Minister calls for 'fair solution' to migration

Mare Nostrum is a cemetery and “a shame on all of us”, said former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi addressing the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) in Brussels this afternoon.

Dr Gonzi stressed the challenge of migration was an urgent one, reflected by thousands saved from death over the last few days.

Around 5,629 people were rescued from 22 different vessels in the three days between April 10 and 12. Italy was working to save another 2,500 late yesterday.

Starting his address in Maltese, Dr Gonzi said: “Migration poses a challenge to us all to live up to the European value of placing people at the centre of our activities… years have gone by and there is still no solution to this enormous challenge we all face. Solutions should respect the dignity of each person with no distinction”.

He warned that the problem must be owned by all member states without exception and was critical of those European countries that insisted on adopting a rigid and negative position on migration.

Dr Gonzi’s call for a “fair solution” to migration came as the committee launched a discussion on a bipartisan report on the situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a holistic approach to migration. An EU policy on migration is expected in May.

Nationalist MEP Roberta Metsola introduced the discussion saying the EU must move on from tweeting condolences to real action.

“Member states continue to bicker on pull factors while bodies continue to wash up on our beaches… The Mediterranean is a centre of broken promises and hopes,” she said.

She stressed there was a 40 per cent increase in applications for international protection in Europe over the last year, with the figure totalling 650,000.

Dr Metsola stressed the need for solidarity with affected countries, as well as addressing the problem of human traffickers and dealing with the root causes of migration.

“The solution is not Fortress Europe,” she said, adding that immigration and asylum deserve a better and fairer European response. “I am optimistic we will get there”.

The second rapporteur, Italian MEP Cécile Kyenge, pointed out Italy had taken in 150,000 migrants. “We have to move away from the idea that this is an emergency,” she stressed.

Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said the events of the last few days should serve as a reminder “that we need to be aware of the realities at our borders” referring also to Europe’s eastern borders facing an influx from instability in Ukraine.

“An unprecedented influx of migrants is the new norm. We need to adjust our responses accordingly,” he said, adding that the new policy on migration expected in May is the start of a process to address the challenge of migration.

Local councils , local councils, and more of the same local bullshit
News about the local council election dominate the news
A rock barely visible on the atlas with 72 local councils
What a waste of money

All these councils and this rock is destroyed beyond repair.
All these councils and the same shit of the past is still here and more shit everywhere.
All these local councils and nobody speaks about the real problems.

We do not need these local councils .
All we need is one man who has the best interest of the Maltese people
A man that does not betray his people.

http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20150420/local/pn-calls-for-stronger-naval-presence-in-the-mediterranean.564793

PN calls for stronger naval presence in the Mediterranean

The Nationalist Party has called for more naval assets to be deployed in the Mediterranean to save lives.

In a statement, the shadow minister for home affairs, Beppe Fenech Adami, and the shadow minister for foreign affairs, Roberta Metsola, said the events of the last few days showed yet again how crucial it was for Europe to take a concrete stand on migration and move on from empty statements,

"There is a moral obligation on every EU Prime Minister to act and to act now. We cannot allow the Mediterranean to continue its descent into a cemetery of broken promises, broken hopes and broken lives.

"Prime Ministers cannot bicker about increased pull factors while bodies continue to wash up on our beaches."

As for the medium term, the PN said improving stability in Libya was crucial as were legal migration options and helping countries in Africa get back on their feet.

"The Nationalist Party call upon every EU Prime Minister to act now, share responsibility and acknowledge that this is a European challenge that requires a European solution," the shadow ministers said.

God help us should these two morons ever become Ministers.
One, un degno figlio di papa!
The other, had she been born a boy: Kienet tilhaq il Provincial tal Gizwiti.

What a nadir for the once truly Conservative and serious Nationalist Party.
Now crammed with opportunists, hypocrites and dilettantes.
A Party in Disarray, with no Ideology, no compass - leaderless.
